A Glimpse Of Glory

Series: Mark

Title: A Glimpse of Glory
Mark 9:2-13

2 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5 And Peter said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good that we are here.Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah. 6 For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, This is my beloved Son listen to him. 8 And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only. 9 And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean. 11 And they asked him, Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?12 And he said to them, Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.

Moment 1: A Shining Christ

And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. (2-3)

radiant, intensely white

Moment 2: A Surprising Conversation

And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. (4)

Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. (4:4-5)

The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you It is to him you should listen. Deuteronomy 18:15

Moment 3: A Confused Request

And Peter said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah. For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. (5-6)

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. Revelation 21:3, 22-24

Moment 4: A Divine Voice

And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, This is my beloved Son;[listen to him. And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only. (7-8)

It is to him you should listen.

Moment 5: A Command To Silence

And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean. (9-10)

But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you. (16:7).

Moment 6: An Important Clarification

And they asked him, Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come? And he said to them, Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him. (11-13)

Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. Malachi 4:5

As John's coming was a heralding of the Messiah's coming, so John's rejection was a heralding of the rejection of the Messiah: and both alike were in fulfillment of Scripture.
