Lord Willing

Series: James

11 Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12 There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor? 13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17 So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.  (James 4:11-17)

I. Your Worldliness is Showing in your Words

11 Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law.

You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, (Leviticus 19:16a)

But who are you to judge your neighbor? (12b)

II. Your Worldliness is Showing in your Plans

(Isaiah 46) for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, 10 declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,’

Proverbs 16:33 The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.

Matthew 10:29  Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.

27 for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.  Acts 4:27-28

15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” (James 4:15)

“To assume we control the duration and direction of our lives is an attitude that is simply inconsistent with a Christian worldview in which there is a God who is sovereignly directing the course of human affairs.”
