Why They Crucified The King

Series: Mark

Title: NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD OF JESUS
Why They Crucified the King
Mark 15:15-32

THE SCOURGING
Mark 15:15

. . . and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. - Mark 15:15b

I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard . . . Isaiah 50:6

… the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:5 (KJV)

THE MOCKING
Mark 15:16-20

And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.

Mark 15:16-20

I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting. Isaiah 50:6

But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. All who see me mock me; For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me;
Isaiah 53:6,7,16

THE CRUCIFIXION
Mark 15:21-32

And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them,

to decide what each should take. And it was the third hour when they crucified him. And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,

save yourself, and come down from the cross!” So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

Mark 15:21-32

Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none. They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink. - Psalm 69:20-21

I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; - Psalm 22:8

And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.
Zechariah 12:10

But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; - Isaiah 53:5

. . . they have pierced my hands and feet—I can count all my bones—they stare and gloat over me;
Psalm 22:16-17

they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. - Psalm 22: 18

. . . he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; - Isaiah 53:12

But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; “He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”
Psalm 22:6-8

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their face he was despised, and we esteemed him not. - Isaiah 53:3

“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.
Acts 2:22-23

for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. - Acts 4:27-28

1. Because only a blood sacrifice could fully
atone for our sin

For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life. - Leviticus 17:11

Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding
of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
Hebrews 9:22

2. To help us fully realize the punishment and death that we deserved for our sin.

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for [instead of] us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— Galatians 3:13

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. -1 Peter 2:24

3. To provide us with the ultimate example
to follow

Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. - Hebrews 12:3-4

For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth.
1 Peter 2:21-22

“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, - Matthew 5:11-12

When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. - 1 Peter 2:23

4. To show us just how much He loves us

Mark 15:1-15

In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. - 1 John 4:10

but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. - Romans 5:8
